first-aid as soon as possible. The injured part or wound needs to be cleaned
before applying any kind of medicine. We also need to provide both food and
water so that the animal does not become too weak and is able to get better
soon. If possible, we must provide shelter to the animal till it is able to

Title: Our Relationship With Our
Animal Friends
The relationship between humans and
the animal kingdom including birds is a special relationship. Although birds
and animals may not be able to communicate in words, they can do so using
gestures and eye contact. Unlike what many people believe, animals do not hurt
or try to destroy us just like that. In fact they are usually extremely loyal
and have love and affection for us in their hearts. Some animals can be our
best friends by being there for us, provide protection and security and help us
avoid loneliness by always being around. In fact animals serve us in several
ways in which we do not even come to know in our daily lives. We owe it to our
animal friends to have a relation with them that is full of kindness, honesty
and compassion.

8) You are going to participate in an Interschool Elocution
Competition. The subject given to you is “How to achieve success in life.”
Draft a speech to present it, in a competition.
My fellow students, it is with great pleasure today that I stand
before you to discuss how to achieve success in life. Hopefully by the end of
this session, we all will have a clearer picture on success, what it means and
how to achieve it.
Success, we all want it but so few of us really know how to go
about in achieving it. However, before we set forth in our journey, it is
important to know what success means to you. Remember that for each individual
person, success would mean something else. You cannot understand what success
means to you by simply looking at what others want in their lives. You have to
define what success means to you and what you want to achieve.
Once you know what is success for you, you can set your goal in
life. It is highly important that you plan the key steps in achieving your
goal. Without a proper plan and realistic steps defined, the chances of success
go down. You need to gather as much information as possible and add to your
knowledge of your domain as you go ahead in your steps towards success.
Remember along with proper planning, genuine hard work, perseverance and
confidence is key in moving towards your goals.
Do not be shy in getting guidance from people who have already
achieved success or people who are in your chosen domain. Learning from
people’s experience will help you in your own quest. Learn and follow the path
to success of other successful people. Try to understand the problems they
faced and tackle your own issues accordingly. Get motivated by the passion of
other successful people and use that motivation to fuel your own passion. Your
desire to succeed is second to none and always keep this in mind as you work
hard for your goals.
Remember that there will be sacrifices to be made. Success very
much depends upon how much effort you have put in each step of the way. You
need to develop a never give up attitude as things can get hard at certain
times. Your positive attitude will ensure that even when things get tough, you
do not give up and march towards achieving your goals one by one.
The saying ‘A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it
takes sweat, determination and hard work’ should be kept in mind. Of course
once you do achieve success, the fruits of your labour will be sweetest and
make every sacrifice you made absolutely worth it.
Thank you so much for listening to me today. I am really happy I
was able to share my thoughts with you all and if anyone has any questions,
please feel free to ask me right now.
9) Project Work – Note students need to complete this question on
their own. They can write any 6 subjects and how they will achieve their goal
of scoring well in those subjects.

journey from Mumbai to Ooty, we had a lot of fun during the journey. We left
home at 5 am in the morning. Throughout the journey we never felt tired and
played games all along the way. I will never forget when we reached Ooty by
late afternoon. Seeing the beautiful mountains and tea gardens left me
completely mesmerized. My family saw my joy and were themselves happy that we
took this trip. We went all around Ooty and saw as much as we could. In the

10. Expand the theme in a write-up of about 20 lines.
a) ‘Rumours are spread by fools and accepted by greater fools.’
Rumours are a huge problem in our society. Foolish people who
simply want to create problems or sensationalize a matter for their own
pleasure spread rumours whenever they can. Unfortunately these rumours end up
hurting so many people in various different ways. What is even more unfortunate
is that people who read these rumours end up believing in them without
verifying the facts. Some would argue the ones accepting the rumours are
greater fools when compared to the ones spreading the rumours. This is because
we are allowing a few sadistic people with vested interests to ruin our
society, the unity and wellbeing of the people. No one should get upset or
accept something if they are simply told about it without first trying to see
if the rumour is true or not. Currently our society is going through so many
problems where people attack one another or stop interacting with others simply
because they heard a rumour. In many cases, rumours spread panic amongst people
and the one believing in these rumours end up spoiling their own health. It is
unfortunate that today so many people keep forwarding things via text messages,
chat applications and through other means without knowing whether what they are
forwarding is real or simply misinformation being spread through digital means.
Therefore it is rightly said that rumours are spread by fools but are accepted
by even greater fools.
b) ‘Books are our real friends’
Real friends -> Real
companion -> World of Treasures -> Confidence and courage to speak ->
Improve language skills -> Treasures of knowledge -> Personality
development -> Keep us away from unwanted habits -> Keep us focussed
In today’s world, if there are true friends, then it has got to
be the books that we have. Books are our true companion. They can go with us
wherever and whenever we want. The amount of information or knowledge contained
in books are no short of having a world of treasures at our disposal. We often
do not realize how books help us in so many different ways. They help in
building confidence with us and give us the courage to speak. Reading regularly
helps in improving our language skills while they also continually develop our
personality over time. The knowledge within books moulds our way of thinking
and helps us learn things that we would otherwise not know. The best part about
books is that they develop good habits within us. People who read regularly are
often safeguarded against unwanted habits and utilize their time effectively.
Being engrossed in interesting books helps us maintain focus. All these
positive habits assists us in our daily lives whether we are students or
working in an office. Reading books is not simply a good hobby but an excellent
way of life. Nothing can affect us positively the way books can do over time.
There is no doubt that books are our real friends. Books will always be by our
side and never leave us during our time of need. Books show us the right way
forward and remain with us all throughout the journey of life.

in their looks and appearances that everyone was confused which was which
amongst the two. From the beginning, the speaker suffered due to this as he
ended up with his brother’s name after the nurse mixed them up after being
washed. Even when the speaker went to school, he faced a lot of hardship. He
often got flogged due to the actions of his brother John. The speaker pleaded
with everyone he knew from family to friends, what they would do if they were
him, just to prove his own identity. The close resemblance between the twins
continued to create problems in their adulthood as well. The speaker’s intended

the neighbours came and ended up burying his brother John.

that it can create confusion amongst other people. It shows the problems faced

identifying one from the other.
This
poem particularly talks about one of the brothers that feels he is suffering

COURAGE
WARMING UP!
Chit-Chat
A strange truth – ‘Handicapped are those who refuse to take up
challenges, even with all their senses and physiology in perfect condition.’
– Understand and discuss the above truth
What it means is that we should not consider those with physical
disabilities as people who are handicapped. Those who are physically fine yet
do not have it in them to take up challenges or work hard in their lives are
the ones who are truly handicapped.
– How can you encourage such people to change and become
confident? Discuss at least 4 to 5 ways you can do the above.
1) Firstly we should treat everyone with respect that they
deserve. With respect comes the confidence to communicate and do things.
2) We can motivate them by telling success stories of others
similar to them and what can be achieved with hard work.
3) We can show them the merits of a never give up attitude.
4) Show them how others less fortunate than them have gone ahead
because of their positive attitude and ability to take risks.

teased by his schoolmates because of his disability and he was worried how
people would react if he went to college. In his heart, he really wanted to
study and become someone important, someone who brings positive change in
society. Unfortunately though due to the continuous glare of others, he had
started feeling apprehensive. Luckily for Sumit, his parents were always
supportive of his dreams and never let his disability come in the way of
providing things for him. Even his school Maths teacher often visited him and
would tell Sumit how he was the best student in the class the teacher had ever
seen. He told him not to worry about others as of now. If Sumit continued his
hard work, people would automatically respect him and someday would be proud to
be associated with him. Encouraged by this, Sumit went ahead in his studies.
With great difficulty he travelled to his college daily and worked as hard as
he could. His classmates were in awe of his dedication and his abilities in
Mathematics. Just as the teacher predicted, Sumit went on to do great things
and became one of the most respected students in the college and worked with
some of the best minds in the world to solve complex equations in Physics.

ENGLISH WORKSHOP
1. Refer to the story ‘The Boy who Broke the Bank’ (Lesson 2.2) by
Ruskin Bond.
Read it carefully and write a Review of the same, keeping the
following points in mind.
(a) Name of Story and Writer / Author
(b) Type of story
(c) Background and setting (Time and Place)
(d) Main characters
(e) Problem faced
(f) Language used
(g) What you liked about the story
(h) What you did not like about it
(i) Your general opinion of the story
Answer:
The Boy who Broke the Bank is a short story written by renowned
and award winning author Ruskin Bond. The story is set in the fictional town of
Pipalnagar, in rural India.
The main story of The Boy who Broke the Bank revolves around the
fact that rumours can spread like wildfire through a town. If unchecked, these
rumours can create havoc in people’s lives. Unfortunately the human tendency to
gossip leads to people exaggerating circumstances and issues while conveying to
others. This leads to false news spreading quickly from people to people.
The story begins with the character of Nathu who is unhappy due
to his wages getting delayed by the Pipalnagar Bank. When he mentions about
this to his friend Sitaram, things take a turn as the news spreads from one
person to the other, each exaggerating slightly. The end result is that people
in the town think the Pipalnagar bank is shutting down due to bankruptcy and
they are worried about their money.
The story has several characters such as Nathu, Sitaram, Mrs.
Srivastava, Mrs. Bhushan, Seth Govind Ram who is the owner of the bank etc.
Overall the story is highly engaging and is amusing as well. The
writer has used nice and simple language so that everyone can understand the
story well. While The Boy who Broke the Bank is an entertaining story, it did
feel a bit rushed in the end.
I personally like the way people’s tendency to gossip was
conveyed in the story. Couple of the characters were quite funny in the way
they acted. There are some strong words used such as sons of donkeys that could
have been avoided considering this story is aimed at children as well.
Overall I would highly recommend The Boy who Broke the Bank to
everyone. It is an engaging, entertaining story with a very important message
of the harm rumours can cause in our society.

Answer:
The Magic of the Lost Temple is another children’s literature
book by beloved author Sudha Murty. It is about a young girl named Nooni who is
sent to live at her grandmother’s village for a while. Being a city girl, Nooni
is surpised at the pace of life in the village and keeps herself busy doing
many odd jobs that are available. When she finds a mysterious stepwell in the
middle of the forest, things take a turn and a new exciting adventure begins.
The book has the most appropriate title as readers will be lost
in the magic of the ancient temple and its mysteries. Nooni being a curious
girl is able to go on this fun adventure and discover ancient secrets. While
the book begins with Nooni going to live with her grandmother in the village,
soon she starts to explore not just the village but the surrounding forests as
well. It is here deep in the forest that she finds the stepwell leading to an
ancient temple. The book beautifully captures the emotions of a young girl, the
curiousness inside of her and also about village life. The relation between
Nooni and her grandmother is also depicted wonderfully.
The language used in the book is simple yet young readers get to
learn a lot. Easy to understand English is used throughout the book and the
wordings flow very well ensuring continuity.
While there are no real weaknesses of the book, some readers may
find it quite straightforward and could wish for more twists and turns. The
mystery of the lost temple could have been explored further.
Overall I highly recommend this book to everyone. It has a
wonderful message of the curiousness in young minds and how they should explore
their surroundings. Special relationship between grandmother and granddaughter
is also one of the highlights of this book.
